The fortress of Ufa was founded in 1574 at the confluence of the Belaya and Ufa rivers . In 1586 it was granted the status of a town.

Ufa’s industrial development started in the 19th century. By the middle of the century there were over a dozen tanneries and a few quays in the town. The opening of regular boat traffic on the Belaya River in 1870 and the construction of the Samara-Zlatoust (presently Kuibyshevskaya) railway (1888-1892) greatly influenced the fate of the town. By the end of the 19th century about 30 plants and factories were operating in Ufa including woodworking, tanning, silicate and agricultural enterprises as well as rail and ship-repair yards. Trading in bread and meat was also prominent

In the late 20s and 30s of the 20th century the Ufa Integrated Industrial Plant and a few light and food industry enterprises started their work. In 1922 Ufa Governorate was abolished by an official decree, and Ufa was announced capital of Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

During the Great Patriotic War dozens of industrial enterprises, a lot of institutions and a number of research institutes were evacuated to Ufa.

In the post-war period three oil refineries started operating in Ufa. Thanks to their work Ufa has turned into a major oil refining center. Together with that the city has seen intensive development of its chemical and mechanical engineering industries.

Today Ufa City is a large administrative, industrial, cultural and scientific centre of Bashkortostan Republic, as well as the whole Ural region. The city is situated on the border of Europe and Asia and occupies over 700 square kilometers.
